 The Support Group
After discharge from the Hospice, the patients keep in contact with the doctors by returning for their regular checkups and medication. The great challenge is trying to be more economical and keep going on the allocated grant, as it has been reduced this year. Grants are requested for most of our patients, but the foreign families do not qualify and sometimes have nothing and no-one to help. We feel privileged to care for our patients and help them in their vulnerable state. And if they come in time, we can truly help them. They also help us by their patience and endurance in spite of approaching death. Our support group is doing very well in the sewing room and is gaining useful experience. A number of our patients return here to do occupational work such as beadwork and sewing to support themselves.

Sister Hilary’s cooking class is looking out for baking equipment. Presently they use the facilities in the Hospice but these are not always available for training.

Sister Annamercy oversees a sewing lesson. The sale of items made in these classes gives hope and encouragement to the participants.

The Clinic

In co-operation with the Catholic Bishops of Southern Africa and PEPFAR, we provide a clinic for over 1500 patients from the local community, where ARV treatment is available for HIV/AIDS sufferers. All of the Sisters and Staff involved in the ARVD programme have attended training courses regarding the administration of the medication, drug literacy and pre- and post-therapy counselling. The patients are all given drug literacy training and will receive on-going counselling.  But more importantly they have access to doctors and nurses who can treat the opportunistic infections they might also have, in a calm and loving environment.

St Basil’s Hospice

We offer loving care to all our patients through the dedication of our Doctor and nursing staff.
Patients’ health often improves sufficiently to be discharged to their families, to live productive lives in their communities. We also assist them to obtain disability grants, if they qualify and we endeavor to help those without ID documents.

We have had 124 admissions, 104 discharges and 48 deaths during the past year.

The Sisters’ Outreach Visits

Sister Bridget runs an outreach programme working closely with the Hillbrow Clinic. Sr Bridget and Sr Hilary, with their volunteer helpers, visit, counsel, and minister to needy AIDS victims and their families, as well as the poor and destitute in Hillbrow, and the squatter camps in Jo Slovo and the Denver areas. Bread, nappies, mealie-meal, vegetables and clothing for the children and adults are distributed each week.
